Description of the errors

Error 1… Why ‘turn in’is replaced with ‘arrived in’?

Answer . The phrasal verb ‘turn in’ has two or three meanings. None fit here.

Example ..

Meaning 1 ..The bandit was avoiding arrest by hiding in different places. However, he soon became tired and moneyless and decided to surrender. One fine morning, he turned himself in to the police inspector with a tired and repentant face. (Means .. To sirrender)

Meaning 2 .. When it began to rain, and the stadium became somewhat dzark, both captains decided to turn in the match and return to their hotels. (Means .. Abandon the match)

Meaning 3 .. The minister had asked the District Forrest Officer to submit a report o n the recent forest fire that killed nearly one hundred animals and reduced the forest to ashes. The DFO turned in his report to the minister today. (Means .. to submit formally)

Meaning 4 .. Most engineering students turn in at around midnight du’e to their heavy study load. (Means .. To go to bed)

Other phrasal verbs using ‘turn’ …

Turn up .. The doctor has not turned up today. So, the patients are sad. (Turn up means ‘come’.)

Turn off.. I asked my room mate to turn off the light as I was going to turn in to bed. (Turn off means switch off)

Turn around .. The T.B patient’s health turned around fast after he took the prescribed medicines and ate nutritious food. (Turn around means to recover.)

Turn away .. The beggars were turned away from the temple’s door after the Collector’s order. (Turn away means  moved away.)

Error 2 … Both ‘is’ and was’ are correct. If the incident happened recently, and the wife is alive, using ‘is’ will be correct. On the contrary, if the incident happened long back and the wife is dead, ‘was’ is the correct word. However, grammar rules say that if the paragraph starts with a past tense verb, all verbs later must be in past tense.

Error 3 …  ‘Good at’ is right. Here the preposition should be ‘at’.

Error 4 … Friend is singular, so we have to write friend’s.

Error 5 … To start is correct. We can write ‘for starting cooking’. -ing can’t be added to the verb if To is used before it.

Error 6 … We have to write friend’s.

Error 7 … The right phrasal verb is ‘put off’.  (I means ‘to get upset’.)

Error 8 …  It should be ‘could’ – in past tense because the paragraph started in the past tense.

Error 9 … It should be ‘found’—in the past tense due to the reason stated earlier.

Error 10 … It should be ‘had’—in the past tense due to the reason stated earlier.

Error 11 … It should be ‘frustrated’ –as adjective.

Error 12 … It should be ‘returned’—in the past tense due to the reason stated earlier.
