The Adventures of Toto
Think about it.
1. How does Toto come to grandfather’s private zoo?
Ans .. The grandfather was an animal lover. He happened to see Toto miserably held captive by a Tonga driver. The discomfort in Toto’s face kindled pity in the grandfather’s heart. He bought Toto from its owner by paying five rupees.
2. “Toto was a pretty monkey.” In what sense is Toto pretty?
Ans.. Toto’s eyes were sparkling, and its teeth were white. Its eyebrows were deeply set. As a monkey, it looked pretty.
3. Why does grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and how? Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto a dog?
Ans: Toto, if left behind at home, could have exposed itself to grandmother who was a lady with no tolerance for mischiefs. So, his master had kept him in hiding at home. When the time came for going to Saharanpur, the old man thought it proper to take Toto with him. He packed Toto inside a loose bag and took it with him. Toto had four legs and a tail. In this regard, it looked like a dog. So, the ticket collector insisted on charging the grandfather for the monkey’s trip.
4. How does Toto take a bath? Where has he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?
Ans.. Toto used to cautiously step into the warm water container by first outing one of its legs into it. If the water was reasonably warm, it would dip itself inside water. Often, he used a soap to wash his body clean.
Toto learned it from humans.
On one occasion, Toto dipped itself in the reasonably warm water of a large tea kettle, but when the water began to heat up, Toto struggled to come out of the hot kettle. It faced the risk of being burned to death.
5. Why does the author say, “Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long”?
Ans.. True to the nature of animals of its species, Toto was mischievous and deserved joy by ripping apart domestic items. The household of the grandfather couldn’t afford losing items like clothes, curtains etc. frequently. So, they couldn’t keep Toto for long.
