Convert the following Direct speech to Indirect speech

 

  1. The teacher asked the students, “How many of you have done your home tasks?”

Ans .. The teacher asked the students how many of them had done their home tasks.

2. When asked, my mother replied, “I am weaving a sweater for you.”

Ans .. When asked, my mother replied that she was weaving a sweater for me.

3. The policeman told the villagers, “All of you must come to the minister’s meeting tomorrow.”

Ans .. The policeman ordered all the villagers to come to the minister’s meeting the next day.

4. The Sarpanch asked the villagers, “Can any of you swim across this river?”

Ans .. The Sarpanch wanted to know from the villagers if any of them could swim across the river.

5. Ramesh asked his friend, ‘Did you watch last night’s cricket match?’

Ans .. Ramesh wanted to know from his friend f he had watched the previous night’s cricket match.

Draw hints from the above examples, convert the following Direct sentences to Indirect form.

  1. “How are the students enjoying their new library facility?”, asked the principal to the professor.
  2. “Did the truck driver ignore the traffic signal?”, enquired the senior traffic inspector.
  3. The visitors to the cafeteria said to the cook, “We all will come to eat here tomorrow.”
  4. The manger sternly told the defaulter loanee, “You must deposit the amount by 3pm today.”
  5. President Trump said, “I want a quick end to the Russia-Ukraine war before the end of this year.”

Convert the following Indirect sentences to Direct form.

  1. The gardener informed the owner that he had plucked a basket of mangoes the previous day.

Ans.. The gardener told / informed the owner, “I plucked a basket of mangoes yesterday.”

2. The son told his father that he couldn’t go to her sister’s house as he was busy with his studies.

Ans .. The son told his father, “I can’t go to my sister’s house as I am busy with my studies.”

3. The driver told the passenger to come out of the car as it was going to catch fire.

Ans .. The driver told the passengers, “Come  out of the car as it is going to catch fire.”

4. The farmers bluntly told the minister that they would vote for him only if the bank sanctioned them loans timely.

Ans .. The farmers bluntly told the minister, “We will vote for you only if the bank sanctions us loans timely.”

  4. The Afghans told the Chinese Ambassador that his country must rush enough aid to them after the earthquake.
  5. The son said to his mother that he needed to be admitted to a better school.
  6. The cancer patient praised the doctors saying that because of them he had fought back the deadly disease.
