अनुवाद – २१/०५/२०२१
पूरे साढ़े सात साल के बाद लाहौर से अमृतसर आए थे। हाकी का मैच देखने का तो बहाना ही था, उन्हें ज्यादा चाव उन घरों और बाज़ारों को फिर से देखने का था, जो साढ़े सात साल पहले उनके लिए पराए हो गये थे। हर सड़क पर मुसलमानों की कोई न कोई टोली घूमती नजर आ जाती थी। उनकी आँखें इस आग्रह के साथ वहाँ की हर चीज़ को देख रही थीं, जैसे वह शहर साधारण शहर न होकर एक खास आकर्षण का केन्द्र हो।
तंग बाज़ारों में से गुज़रते हुए वे एक-दूसरे को पुरानी चीज़ों की याद दिला रहे थे– देख, फतहदीना, मिसरी बाज़ार में अब मिसरी की दुकानें पहले से कितनी कम रह गई हैं। उस नुक्कड़ पर सुक्खी भठियारन की भट्ठी थी, जहाँ अब वह पान वाला बैठा है। यह नमक मण्डी देख लो, खान साहब ! यहाँ की एक-एक ललाइन वह नमकीन होती है कि बस !
बहुत दिनों के बाद बाज़ारों में तुर्रेदार पगड़ियाँ और लाल तुर्की टोपियाँ दिखाई दे रही थीं। लाहौर से आए हुए मुसलमानों में काफ़ी संख्या ऐसे लोगों की थी, जिन्हें विभाजन के समय मजबूर होकर अमृतसर छोड़कर जाना पड़ा था। साढ़े सात साल में आए अनिवार्य परिवर्तनों को देखकर कहीं उनकी आँखों में हैरानी भर जाती और कहीं अफ़सोस घिर आता– वल्लाह, कटड़ा जयमलसिंह इतना चौड़ा कैसे हो गया? क्या इस तरफ़ के सबके सब मकान जल गए? यहाँ हकीम आसिफ़ अली की दुकान थी न ? अब यहाँ एक मोची ने कब्जा कर रखा है।
Translation:
After a full seven and half years, he had come to Amritsar from Lahore. Seeing the hockey match was just a prelude. His intent was to see the tea shops, the houses and the bazars that had become so hostile seven and half years ago. One could see a cart pushed by a Muslim in every street. He was eyeing each and every shop with such great attention as if it was not an ordinary city, but a tourist attraction.
While emerging out of the Nang Bazar, wares reminded the visitor of one another – Fatahdina, the candy hub that has so many of these shops than before. The market spot ahead there where a bread-making kiln stood. Now a Pan shop sits there. See the salt mandi, Khan Sahib.
After a long time, Turedar headgears, and red Turkish hats are visible. Among the visitors from Lahore, there were many who had been forced out during the division. Seeing the in evitable changes that have come about in the last seven and half years, bewilderment and repentance must have filled their eyes. Oh No, how could the Karda Jaymahal Singh become so wide? Did all buildings of this side burn to ashes? Didn’t Hakim Asif Ali not have his shop here? Now a cobbler has laid siege to it.
