Answer : The young student’s sweetheart was going to throw a ball the next day, and as per prior agreement, he could dance with her only if she gave her a red rose. The you student had failed to get one such rose in the whole garden, and was clearly heart-broken as the opportunity to dance with her almost appeared to be slipping away.

The thorn of the rose tree would pierce the nightingale inflicting great pain.
