Offensive as noun .. Myanmar is conducting a large scale military offensive against the rebels living in the border areas.  (It means ‘a military campaign / organized attack’)

Offensive as adjective .. My closest friend stopped talking to me when I passed an offensive comment on her brother.

 

Pummel as verb… A violent storm pummeled Rench Sasan the whole night causing massive destruction of houses and trees.

Or

The Odisha Military Police pummeled the Maoist stronghold inside Koraput’s dense forests forcing the rebels to flee to safer places.

 

Bid ..as noun .. My bid for the property auctioned by the bank was the highest. Soon, I paid the amount, and occupied the property.

Bid as verb .. In the bank’s auction dozens of rich people of our area bid for the property. (Bidded is wrong. Past tense of ‘bid’ is ‘bid’.)

 

In a bid to .. In a bid to stop the rampant copying in the examination, the college authorities installed a few cameras in the examination hall.

Or

In a bid to go abroad for higher studies, my friend appeared many qualifying tests like GRE and TOEFL.

 

Carve out .. It means to take possession of something by use of force.

In history, we have read how Pakistan was carved out of undivided India due to the pressure exerted by Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Or

The railways had to carve out a long passage through the huge rock to lay the rail track.

Or

To carve out a civil service career, students often have to study hard for upto five years.

 

Slice as noun.. For breakfast, I usually eat four slices of bread and a boiled egg.

Slice as verb .. The cook sliced the large potato into  thin pieces in order to fry it.

Bidding its time is a phrase.  It means waiting for the opportune (suitable) time to start doing something.

Sentence .. It seems clear that Rahul Gandhi is bidding his time to make his claim to the prime minister’s chair.

Or

The gang of robbers was hiding inside the forest for days. They were bidding their time to enter the village and rob the homes of the rich people.

 

Evacuate .. The fire brigade asked the people in the apartment to evacuate quickly as the fire from the switch board was spreading fast.

Or

When a flood comes on the villages on its bank, people are ordered to evacuate to safer places.

 

Retaliate .. My classmate pulled my hair. I retaliated by giving her a hard blow.

Or

Hamas has lost most of its military power. Yet, it often retaliates against Israel by firing rockets into Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel.

 

Ally as noun .. It means ‘a friendly person or a party or a company’.

BJP has agreed to accept TDP and the JD (U)  as allies to get enough votes in the parliament to run the government.

Or

In coalition politics, the larger party makes extra effort to keep its allies happy.

 

Ally as verb .. During the Second World War, Germany alled with Italy and Japan to fight the Allies (U.S., U.K, France, Russia etc.)

To get a green light .. It means to get support from some others

The health department has got a green light from the chief minister to compulsorily give polio vaccine to all babies.

To get a greenish light means to get some overall support.

 

Escalate .. To  increase or spread ..

Prices of goods escalate rapidly when inflation surges.

Or

The Manipur government is trying hard to stop the escalation of violence in the state.
